IT sounds like an office worker's dream - a desk that turns into a bed - but it is a dream that inventor Antony Dixon has made real.

Mr Dixon, of High Wycombe, thought up the idea of the Besk while drinking in a Flackwell Heath pub.

He has given up work to sell his invention which is being exhibited at the Tomorrow's World Live event at Earl's Court in London, between June 27 and July 1, and could win £70,000 if it is chosen as the best exhibit there.

He said: "I think we have got a great chance. A lot of inventions are very detailed and technical and the Besk is obvious."

He invented the Besk to overcome a shortage of space in his house. He needed to have a study but also wanted a spare bedroom.

"I am quite inventive anyway and thinking up answers to things. Now everybody works from home. Everybody needs more space and this seemed like an answer."

Mr Dixon gave up work with Lombards as an account manager to go into business with his father manufacturing his invention.

He said: "We have been in business ten weeks and have received a hell of a lot of interest. We sell them by mail order and over the internet. They're selling at the rate of four or five a week. We're launching a retail model in July. They will be in places like Courts and Habitat."

The Besks are assembled at Grendon Underwood and components made by other companies. Mr Dixon said: "It is a family business at the moment. My brother, my girlfriend and my parents are involved."

The Besk may turn a desk into a bed but Mr Dixon says going into business has not done much for his sleep.

He admits he is so busy now that, "I do not eat or sleep any more."
