VULNERABLE people across the Chiltern district face sweeping cuts in key social services after councillors froze the amount of cash given to the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

At Chiltern CAB's annual general meeting on Wednesday, chairman Jane Bramwell explained the CAB Chesham branch, High Street, could be forced to close unless more cash could be found to fund extra training costs.

Blaming Chiltern District Council for freezing the amount it gives to the CAB, Mrs Bramwell said: "Letters from Chiltern District Council have told us to look for funding elsewhere. There is no funding elsewhere. We are completely stuck really."

The CAB gives free support and advice to people on such issues as employment, welfare and debt repayment. The bulk of its funding comes from the council.

At the meeting, Cllr Don Phillips, chairman of Chiltern District Council, hit back. He said out of a total council grant fund of £285,000 for 2001, £152,000 went to the CAB.
