BUSINESSES are being urged to step-up security arrangements for their laptop computers after police reported an alarming rise in theft of the machines.

The Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry is encouraging companies to beware after Thames Valley Police figures show that 250 laptops per month are being stolen in the Thames Valley area.

Some are stolen by brazen thieves who walk into company offices pretending to be visitors or cleaners and take the equipment from desks.

Bill McCardle, policy manager at the chamber of commerce, said: "Losing a laptop can be devastating for a business, especially if the files and contact details on it have not been backed up.

"The chamber is working with Thames Valley Police to solve the problem."

Chief Inspector Barry Keane, of the Thames Valley Business Crime Centre, said: "We have been trying for some time now to raise the profile of this type of offence.

"In real terms, the cost to business and the economy of the region is far more than the theft of the laptop itself.

"Our message to business people is don't leave laptops lying around in cars, offices and conference centres.

"Lock them away or take them away with you."
