PLANS to build six detached houses near a busy road were refused after councillors said the access would be so dangerous it would cause an accident every other week.

The planning applications panel of Wycombe District Council saw plans to build the four-bedroomed detached homes behind Juniper Drive, High Wycombe, giving new residents access onto the busy New Road.

Cllr Anne Stenner ( Lab, Booker and Castlefield) said: "There may be room for these dwellings but I think New Road is extremely dangerous. There have already been fatal accidents on that part of the road where the access is blind and the lower access is blind.

"All the roads leading off, without exception, are dangerous. A less obtrusive design, using another access may be acceptable."

Cllr David Fieldhouse (Con, Bowerdean and Daws Hill) said: "If we allow six houses coming out of that road junction there is going to be an accident every other week there."

He said that on a site visit he had seen that there was a visibility of no more than 20 feet.

The highways authority said that the accesses meet with visibility requirements, though hedges would need to be cut back.

After spending 65 minutes considering the application, it was refused by a majority on the grounds that too much vegetation would be lost and because of the impact on adjoining properties.
