VANDALS slashed tyres on more than 25 cars after going on the rampage on Sunday morning.

Cars in Alma Road, Berkhampsted Road, Alexander Street and George Street in Chesham, were scratched down the side by vandals.

Police say the cost of the damage could run into thousands of pounds.

Chesham PC Alan Edwards said: "I have never known anything quite like this before. It is quite hard to understand why they did that. We are speaking to people regarding witnesses and we are making enquiries."

A woman, who did not want to be named, said she was appalled that her husband's tyres were ruined.

She said: "A neighbour flagged him down while he was driving away in his car to tell him what had happened. He seemed a bit annoyed about it, but as it was a company car we were lucky we did not have to pay for the damage."

Gwen Graves, who lives in Alma Road, said: "We cannot have anything in the garden. They have stolen our pots and ornaments. There is a path at the top of the road and all sorts of people come through. I have even had my hub-caps removed off my car and thrown over into the front garden."

Bill Harrap, of Harrap Motors, on Berkhampsted Road, said his work has increased since the attack.

He said: "We have had quite a few people come in for tyres. We had five people on Sunday morning. The side walls of the tyres were cut, and it looks like they had probably been cut with a very sharp knife."

Witnesses are urged to call PC Edwards on 01494 465888.
