SIR Steve Redgrave talked about his earliest sporting ambitions after handing out 120 medals to young sportsmen.

Bourne End Junior Sports Club held its annual prize-giving last Friday with their five times Olympic hero honorary president who lives in Marlow Bottom.

Young members of the junior sports club were commended for their achievements by Sir Steve who shook hands and awarded them medals.

Gerry Paine, chairman of Bourne End Junior Sports Club, said: "We are delighted to welcome Sir Steve Redgrave, our honorary president, to present the awards.

"The club welcomes children of all levels of ability in sport. However, many children do progress to excel in their sport."

Several young members of the club have signed for professional football clubs and currently, the sports club has 600 members between the ages of six and 18.

Sir Steve told the youngsters about his humble beginnings as a budding sportsman by taking part in lots of sports and said one of his dreams was scoring a winning goal in the FA Cup final.

Guests heard that his introduction to rowing came later in his school life.

He said: "As a child I went to Marlow Regatta along with everyone else but I only remember that the fair was great."

He encouraged all the youngsters to continue with their interest in sport.

One young sportsman asked whether Sir Steve was affected by nerves.

He replied: "You've got to harness it and focus. You only need to worry if you're not nervous."
