WANDERERS boss Lawrie Sanchez slammed his players' attitude after they handed free-falling Cambridge their first win in 13 attempts on Boxing Day.

He accused several of his players of being big time Charlies who only get going in the glamour games after they went down 1-0 at The Abbey Stadium on Tuesday.

He said: "We're alright when we play Millwall and the big teams but when we come to places like Oldham and Cambridge we think we are too good for it.

"We think we're above it for some reason. I don't know why we're like that I wish someone could tell me."

Only the defence and keeper Martin Taylor were exempt from his criticism as Blues let themselves and their 590 travelling supporters down.

Wycombe managed just two shots all match and won only one corner against Cambridge's 16. Cambridge also rattled the bar and had three other attempts hacked off the line as they dominated proceedings.

Sanchez also blamed himself as the Blues came a Christmas cropper.

He said: "You could tell in that first ten minutes what was happening. I was looking to make substitutions after 20 minutes but Terry Gibson talked me out of it. But I should have done it and in future when I see that players aren't at it I will take them off straight away even if they do feel humiliated.

"We were poor from the first minute with the exception of the back four and the keeper, who did excellently. But they were given no help by the other six players.

"We were poor up front, poor in midfield and we've been beaten by a team that's no better than us they just wanted it much more on the day.

"There was no secret behind it. They just wanted it more. You could see that from the number of headers and tackles they won. We believe we're better than we are and that attitude has got to change."

Cambridge, without a league win since October 13, should have been there for the taking but, as Wanderers stood off, they grew in confidence and dominated from start to finish.

Only keeper Taylor stopped them from taking a 13th minute lead with a brilliant recovery save. Paul Connor took the ball round him but was then too wide to get his shot in. He pulled the ball back to Stuart Wilson who seemed certain to score beforeTaylor flashed out his left hand.

Five minutes later Taylor kept John Dreyer's shot out with his legs while it took a brave effort from Jason Cousins, who chucked his body in the way of a shot, to deny the same player again.

Wanderers were under siege and on the few occasions they did break out they were caught in Cambridge's well-oiled offside trap.

But despite this, they should have snatched a totally undeserved lead with their one meaningful attack on 40 minutes.

Bored Cambridge keeper Lionel Perez came storming out to the edge of his area to try and claim a Dave Carroll cross but, under pressure from Andy Rammell, he dropped the ball into the path of Steve Brown. Brown should have scored, but he could not keep the bouncing ball down and volleyed over the open goal.

Wanderers had to make a change at half time with Mark Rogers coming on at right back for Ben Townsend, who tweaked his hamstring.

Wycombe's charitable mood continued into the second half and within two minutes of the restart Tom Youngs slammed a shot against the bar.

Ten minutes later Keith Ryan almost scored an embarrassing own goal when Tom Cowan's long throw skidded off the top of his head and flew inches wide.

But it was the unhappy Ryan who did eventually gift-wrap Cambridge their 65th minute winner.

Instead of clearing the ball in his own penalty area he played it into the path of Youngs who gleefully accepted the present to put the hosts ahead.

Niall Thompson, who had come on for the ineffective Sam Parkin, came closest to snatching an undeserved equaliser when he skidded a 20 yard shot just beyond Perez's right-hand post but it would have been the biggest robbery since the Great Train heist had it sneaked in.
