THE Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has finally opened its footpaths as the crisis over foot and mouth begins to subside

Residents in Cookham are delighted that at last they can walk in surrounding fields.

David Armstrong, clerk of Cookham Parish Council, said: "It was quite serious that we could not get near Winter Hill and Lee Farm.

"A lot of people have been restricted but there have been no complaints. People have been very co-operative."

The move follows new guidance from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries which says that all footpaths in non-infected areas can be reopened.

Michael Coughlin, director of planning and environment for the borough, said: "The reopening of footpaths is hugely important. We would like to encourage people to get out and enjoy the wealth of walks around the borough."
