COMPOSER Patrick Gazard has written a piece of music in honour of Olympic rower Sir Steven Redgrave.

Mr Gazard, director of music at Marlow's Sir William Borlase's Grammar School and who confesses to have never met Sir Steven, has entitled the piece Five Gold Rings.

He commented that the title was a reference to the Olympic symbol, as well as Sir Steven's record five gold medals.

He will conduct the orchestra himself.

Mr Gazard said: "The work attempts to depict the daily grind of training rather than the glorious result.

"This is not a triumphant work, more of a realistic look at Steve's former life as I imagine it."

He went on: "There is even a section described as 'the pain barrier' and the ending simply fades away to illustrate the sense of continuity."

The theme develops into a melancholy jazz waltz.

The work will be played for the first time at the Marlow Town Regatta and Festival by Wycombe Schools' Jazz Orchestra tomorrow.
