STREET parties, fairs and musicals are some of the suggestions for how Marlow could celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee next June.

The town council met on Tuesday to discuss ideas for four days of events over the bank holiday on June 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Queen is due to visit Buckinghamshire and Berkshire on May 10.

Maurice Oram, town mayor, is chairman of the council's Golden Jubilee Committee.

He said: "In 1977 I remember lots of street parties and children's sport events, but the rules have probably changed dramatically with regard to street parties.

"The May Fair could be moved to to June. That would be a great help in concentrating efforts if that was on the Saturday of that weekend."

A lottery grant of up to £5,000 is available for local communities planning celebrations for the Golden Jubilee which the council is looking at applying for.

Councillor Margaret Done suggested that the public flower beds should be planted out in uniform colours, mainly gold.

The council will call a meeting on September 18 of all interested parties to form a steering committee and come up with some more concrete plans.

The Jubilee marks the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's accession to the throne.
