THE smell of fresh cheese, crepes and baguettes wafted through the air when Marlow's Higginson Park played host to a French market.

Customers flocked to the three-day event, at the weekend, with people travelling from across the region to experience a taste of the continent.

And with 20 per cent more stalls than last year, the market was the biggest since it began three years ago.

"We get people coming from far and wide to visit the market," said Jeff Willmore spokesman for Wycombe District Council, which organised the day.

He added: "It brings business into Marlow for the shop traders as well as the market. The experience of the traders is that it's almost as busy as the regatta weekend."

Phillipe Burger, of Burgers Confectioners, opposite Higginson Park, said: "People came to us for a cup of tea after they had been to the market."

Visitors to the market were also impressed.

"There's a nice big selection of everything, and there's a lovely atmosphere. We would definitely recommend it to other people" said Alexandra Horton, who came from Flackwell Heath to see the market.

"Most of these things you can't get anywhere else and it's cheaper than going to France to get them!

"I don't mind paying a bit extra because it's nice to just come here," added Mrs Horton.

But some customers were less impressed by the price of the goods, which included cheeses, pastries, soaps, toys, bread, flowers and clothing.

Mr Willmore added: "It was a huge success despite the attraction of Tim Henman and other sporting events. It has become a very popular part of the Marlow calendar.

"We are very pleased with its success and also the farmers' market. We hope to make them both permanent fixtures in the town."
