HOPES are high as local groups submit plans to a committee set up to look into future uses of the old Downley School.

But Downley Parish Council has warned organisations that the Government's local plan, due to be finalised next year, may put a halt to any plans.

The three-classroom school in Grays Lane is currently being used by the Downley School's Key Stage 2 pupils but a move to new premises in Faulkner Way in December means the school will be vacant.

Buckinghamshire County Council said it is keen to keep the rooms for community use but cannot commit until the local plan is announced.

Already suggestions for a pensioner drop-in centre, a doctor's surgery and computer suite have been received by committee members.

"It is early days yet but we are inviting groups to put their cases forward if they wish to be considered," said Chris Hamilton, Downley's parish clerk.

"Groups will need to draw up a management plan and will need to be in a position to rent the buildings. We just hope it is not a non-starter."
