PLOUGH INN secured the first half of a potential league and cup double in an exciting Challenge Cup Final against Wycombe Town, winning 3-1 at Adams Park on Sunday.

Plough are currently top of the Premier Division of the High Wycombe Sunday Combination and only need a draw in their final match to win the league and complete the double.

In the cup, the Premiership club were made to fight by a spirited Town, the first second division team to reach the final in the competition's 34-year history.

Town's goalkeeper Dave Molyneaux was outstanding, sweeper Andy Auguste was composed while Vinny Cuva caused Plough's defence problems.

But Plough did not make it easy for themselves, missing numerous chances and having to come from behind to win.

After a nervy start Plough were the first to settle and might have scored on a number of occasions in the first 15 minutes with Spencer Giles, Tristran Hayward and Gary Wiltshire all having shots saved.

Chances still kept coming for Plough, with Jason Bowler causing all kinds of problems down the left with his dribbling.

But Town stuck at it, eventually feeding their diminutive forward Cuva on the ground rather than in the air.

One run showed Cuva's burst of pace and it was his speed that helped Town take a surprise lead on 43 minutes.

Andy Young won the ball in midfield and played it through. Cuva's pace unnerved Lee Elliott who failed to clear and Cuva was able to slide the ball underneath the keeper to send Town into a 1-0 lead at the break.

But back came Plough in the second half, although they kept missing chances with Gary Wiltshire culpable in particular.

It looked as if it might not be Wiltshire's day but then Plough struck twice within a minute.

Wiltshire chased a ball down the right and his cross from the by-line found Gibson to strike home. Then Bowler, named man-of-the-match, rounded three players, James Pritchard flicked it on and Wiltshire found the left-hand corner.

Town tried to rally but never really got close to scoring, while Plough had chances to kill the game off.

Auguste had a final chance in injury time but his 25-yarder was saved easily. The ball was then transferred down the other end and substitute Greg Murphy made up for an injury-hit season by poking the ball home.

It was a deserved victory for Plough in a hard but fair game.
