THE NEW cabinet-style Chiltern District Council is to be led by Don Phillips.

Councillors gave the final go ahead to the changes, which see the end of the old committee system, at a meeting of the council on Tuesday. It is the biggest council restructuring in nearly 30 years.

The district council will now be run under an executive (or cabinet) made up of a leader, Cllr Phillips, and five other portfolio holders, deputy leader, Cllr Tom Dodd (Con, Gold Hill); Cllr Margaret Hamilton (Con, Holmer Green); Cllr Noel Brown (Con, Hilltop, Chesham); Cllr John Warder (Con, Chalfont St Peter) and Cllr Jeremy Banham (Con, Chalfont St Peter, Central).

Cllr Phillips said: "The decision to adopt a completely new Constitution was the most significant event in local civic affairs since the council's formation in 1973. The 2000 Local Government Act required most councils to adopt an entirely new structure.

"In response to Chiltern's consultation the overwhelming majority of residents supported the option based upon an Executive and Leader and this system will commence on June 6."
