PREMIER Division champions Den doubled their silverware haul for the season when they claimed the Dane Baskerville Cup, with victory over St Andrews A.

But second division St Andrews put up an almighty fight against the Wycombe and District League champions.

Underdogs St Andrews were given a 215 point advantage going into the match, leaving them needing at least ten points a leg to win the match.

But first blood went to Den as Nick Hansell proved too steady for St Andrews' Chris Clifford.

Clifford played some good attacking forehands to make a fight of the first leg, but they dried up in the second leg as he succumbed 21-9, 21-4.

Den built on their good start in the second match. Robert Hansell's heavy chop followed by forehand kill combinations proving too hot to handle for his opponent Gareth Morte. Hansell won the match 21-10, 21-2.

St Andrews' miserable start continued in the third match, Ray Wright's backhand attack unable to penetrate Mike Atkinson's solid defence. The 21-4, 21-3 victory meant Den were well ahead of their target going into the fourth match.

Chris Clifford put St Andrews right back into the match though, with an inspired performance to take a leg off Robert Hansell 22-20. Hansell recovered to win the second leg 21-11 but St Andrews now had a foothold in the match.

The fifth match went more or less to handicap, Nick Hansell beating Ray Wright 21-8, 21-13. Hansell then teamed up with Mike Atkinson to convincingly beat Clifford and Morte 21-9 and swing the balance right back in Den's favour.

St Andrews were left with a mountain to climb after the seventh game, Mike Atkinson's stubborn defence proving too much for Gareth Morte as he won 21-7, 21-5.

Ray Wright battled well but went down 21-10, 21-12 to Robert Hansell as the match slipped away from St Andrews. Their fate and Den's victory was all but sealed in the ninth, with Atkinson again proving invincible on the way to beating Clifford 21-6, 21-7.

Den confirmed victory by 19 points with Nick Hansell beating Gareth.
