THE death of Luke Somerfield was, as we all expected, a tragic accident.

Our hearts go out to Luke’s family, whose lives will never be the same.

And the same is true of the three friends who accompanied Luke to Cilyrychen Quarry on that fateful June day.

But heartfelt sorrow is not enough.

Lessons must be learned and action must be taken.

South Wales is dotted with flooded quarries and mines which appear all too inviting to youngsters keen to prove their bravery, and it would be pointless to assume that telling them to stay away will have the desired effect.

The authorities must come up with a plan to assure that these potentially fatal locations are secure and that children – no matter howbrave or adventurous – simply cannot gain access to them.

• MASSIVE congratulations go to Ammanford Cricket Club on being crowned the best in Wales.

The entire town should be rightly proud of our lads in white, who saw off the challenge of the likes of Cardiff, Swansea and the rest to claim the South Wales Premier League title.

Make no mistake, this is an achievement on an Olympic scale – particularly when one remembers that only a boundary from the final ball of the final game of last season saved Ammanford from relegation.

This season’s triumph goes to show that with the right will, spirit and determination, even the most unlikely turnarounds are possible.

Let’s just hope our footballers, rugby players and other sports men and women can draw inspiration and end their campaigns on top of the world too.
