THE LLANDYBIE HGV driver killed in a fatal smash in Northamptonshire on Friday had driven 1.6million miles in the previous 18 years without incident, it has emerged.

Dad-of-two Luke Carter, 47, died when the lorry he was driving was in collision with two parked HGVs in a lay-by on the A5 between Kilsby and the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal at 1.40am.

HisHGVwas thought to have been travelling south towards the terminal before crossing the northbound carriageway and into the lay-by.

Mr Carter – who was originally from Betws – was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Cross Hands-based NR Evans Logistics, who employed MrCarter, said: “Weare all very shocked and saddenedbythe tragic death of Luke Carter.

“Mr Carter had worked for the company for 18 years and was a popular, well-liked and highlyrespected member of staff.

“Our priority at this time is to offer as much helpandsupport as needed to Luke’s family.

“It is also a very difficult time for Luke’s colleagues at NR Evans and we are trying to ensure that our drivers are being well supported.”

In an emotional tribute, companyfounderandmanaging director Neil Evans said he would always remember Mr Carter as a proudWelshman.

“I employed you back in ‘94 and over 18 years you drove for 42,000 hours, covering1.6 millionmileswithout incident,” he added.

“Such a sad loss of a friend and colleague. Rest in peace, Luke. Our thoughts are with Luke’s family and friends.”

Mr Carter’s death is the firms’s first fatality in 28 years of trading.
