Membership advice from visiting friend

LLANDEILO Rotary Club was delighted to welcome Elwyn Williams of Bridgend Rotary Club who gave an interesting account of his club’s success in doubling its membership.

Elwyn, who is chair of membership at Bridgend as well as being the district public relations officer, put his club’s success down to their recent move to a new hotel and functions venue close to the town centre.

This was coupled with more flexible meeting times with breakfast, lunchtime and evening meetings held on alternative weekends.

He said this allowed members who were both retired and those who were working to attend without disruption to their lives.

In addition the meetings were open to wives, partners and friends.

This change was coupled with a fair and flexible payment for membership and a proactive membership committee being formed which contacted potential members put forward by Rotarians who were then invited to a special evening.

This meant that membership at the club more than doubled and, as a result, the club was able to carry out its many charitable fund-raising duties far more easily.

To sum up, Elwyn remarked that while it was relatively simple to attract new members, retaining them was an art.

He summed up his success as being a “simple business practice wrapped up in a Rotarian way”.

President Ken Griffiths warmly welcomed Elwyn and delivered the vote of thanks.
