The role of a mother has changed significantly during the last century, and in a personal documentary Alex Jones: Y Fam Gymreig (Alex Jones: The Welsh Mother) the Ammanford-born presenter reveals that finding the perfect balance between work and home life can be quite a challenge.

The programme is to be broadcast during S4C's season of programmes celebrating Welsh women.

The One Show host Alex will travel around the country to meet other Welsh mums, asking, 'Is it possible to have it all?' - an age old question but is still difficult to answer.

Alex's first stop is with Mary, her own mother, who shares her experience of how things have changed over the years.

Forty years ago, she was considered an 'older mum' after giving birth to Alex at the age of 25.

She was a stay-at-home mum with Alex and her sister for five years, while her husband had to return to work the day following the birth.

"Most of us women today return to work after having a baby. I went back to work three months after Ted was born. That was difficult, and finding the balance between having a life of my own and being a mother is hard," said Alex, who became a mum for the first time last year, and will be publishing her book 'Winging It' in April, where she shares her experiences of motherhood.

One woman who takes the challenge of motherhood to the extreme is Jen, who, together with her husband Rob, is bringing up nine children in their home near Llanrug, Caernarfon.

With the eldest child just turned 17 and the youngest just seven months old, Alex learns about the reality of raising such a large family, with the children getting through ten loaves of bread each week and eight pints of milk every day.

Among the other mothers Alex meets are Sandra from Penygroes who cares for her daughter Marie, who was born with Cerebral Palsy.

Alex also meets a group of mothers who are raising their children through the medium of Welsh in London, and she hears of Elin's unusual journey to becoming a mother to Caitlin, who is now a teenager.

Although the focus of the programme is on mums, the mother's role isn't determined by sex.

Alex meets Alan who fills the role of mother and father in his family. Growing up, he was aware there was no option at that time for a gay man to become a parent. But he remembers vividly the special feeling he felt when he adopted his little boy.

"It felt totally natural from the start. I am showing him that you can do anything; it's ok to be different; it's ok to be yourself."

Alex Jones: Y Fam Gymreig is set to air this Sunday 11 March at 8pm on S4C.
