Welsh Water will be attending west Wales’ largest careers fair, SkillsCymru, which is expected to attract more than 4,000 pupils, parents and jobseekers.

The utilities supplier will attend the event, which takes place in Llanelli’s Parc y Scarlets on 8th and 9th February, with more than 90 other major Welsh employers including Barclays, Aldi and GE Aviation.

Organised by Careers Wales and Coleg Sir Gâr, and supported by the Welsh Government, the event is designed to inspire and educate young people and adults about the variety of different careers and vocational routes available to them.

This year, the event organisers are inviting parents from Carmarthenshire and Swansea to attend the event during an information session on Thursday, February 8 between 3.30pm and 6.30pm.

Parents and guardians will have the chance to speak to employers and apprentices, ask questions and find out career options and prospects in a range of sectors with their children during the extended opening hours.

Welsh Water will have a series of interactive events at its stand, including a sorting game to help pupils determine what jobs Welsh Water are responsible for.

It will also be bringing along several of its apprentices and graduates to help give visitors an idea of what a career with Welsh Water is like, and will be on hand to answer questions.

Linda Williams, Director of Human Resources at Welsh Water, said: “Making links with the local community is important to us. We’re investing £95 million as part of our RainScape work in Llanelli between 2012 and 2020.

"This work will help to reduce the risk of sewer flooding and pollution by catching, slowing and reducing the amount of rain water which goes into the sewer network.

“We’ve partnered with a local school through the Careers Wales Business Class programme to deliver workshops and offer teaching support because we think it’s important to invest in young people who will be our future workforce.

“We’re looking forward to SkillsCymru where we’ll have some of our young employees on our stand ready to talk about their experience of our apprenticeship and graduate schemes and the range of jobs available with Welsh Water.”

Speaking ahead of her planned attendance at the event on February 8, Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan; said: “It’s encouraging to see so many major employers investing in Wales’ future workforce at events such as these.

“SkillsCymru is a unique opportunity for many young people and jobseekers to interact face-to-face with companies and find out what it takes to forge a career in a variety of different industries.

“For young people leaving school, college or university, feeling supported by parents and guardians is a vital part of making the right choice.

“The dedicated information session is a great opportunity for parents to find out more about their child’s next steps and help them to make an informed choice about their future.”

Graham Bowd, Chief Executive at Careers Wales said: “SkillsCymru is designed to give young people a taster of the world of work and help them realise how they can transfer their existing interests into a career.

“It’s also a great opportunity for visitors to find out about jobs they may not have heard of before, and learn about the different routes into work including traineeships, apprenticeships and higher education.”
