A Carmarthenshire County Council employee is going to climb a mountain in the Andes in January to raise money to support Royal Marines, their families, veterans and cadets.

Dog warden Brendan Davies, who is a former Royal Marine, is climbing Aconcaqua with the 65 degrees North organisation in January.

He is the only person from Carmarthenshire doing the climb.

Brendan joined the Royal Marines in 1993 and served at 40 Commando and Comacchio Group.

He took part in many deployments both operational and training.

While serving, he developed a severe back injury which resulted in hospitalisation and rehabilitation following his discharge from the Marines.

He said: “I’m climbing Aconcagua for The Royal Marines Charity because it’s a charity very close to my heart. Money raised will help provide the best possible through-life charitable support for Royal Marines, their families, veterans and cadets.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge that Aconcagua presents. It’s an opportunity to prove myself with a small team of extraordinary people.”

Carmarthenshire County Council Armed Forces Champion Cllr David Jenkins, who is himself an ex-serviceman, said: “I wholeheartedly support Brendan’s fundraising effort. He is taking on the challenge of climbing to the roof of the Andes to help serving and former Royal Marines and their families. I would urge people to sponsor Brendan generously.”
