NEW hope has been breathed into plans for bringing a disused bike track back to life.

Back in February, a petition was launched by Glanaman residents calling on the county council to revamp Cwmaman BMX Track.

The track, just off the riverside walk in Glanaman, has been a part of the community for decades.

However, over recent years it has fallen into a state of disrepair and was faced with demolition.

The online petition, which collected more than 200 signatures, called on Carmarthenshire county council to allow community volunteers to take control of the track.

The volunteer group, led by Garnant dad Ben Jones, is ready to clear, restore and develop the track by working with local traders, Cwmaman town council and the county council.

Ben said: “I spent most of my childhood out on my BMX and had a real love of outdoor pursuits.

“When I was younger the track was used a lot by local residents and those from neighbouring communities.

“It was well maintained, challenging, exciting and provided a great way for children and young people to take safe risks and stay healthy.”

After a nine month wait, residents may soon be on track to take over the site.

The council said local people are now welcome to apply to take over the management of the track.

Executive board member for property and asset management, Cllr David Jenkins said: “We are in discussions with Cwmaman Town Council and have indicated that we would be happy to transfer the facility to local management to help bring the facility back into use.

“There was a BMX track on this land established by Dinefwr Borough Council more than 20 years ago.

“The site is now overgrown with only small areas of the track still visible.

“We would welcome approaches from groups interested in managing other assets around the county as part of our asset transfer programme.”
