A novel which tells the tale of the Second World War from the perspective of dogs has been created by a Towy Valley accountant.

Tim Williams, originally from Llandovery, has released his first novel which was inspired by his 14-year-old terrier called Jack and his favourite programme Dad’s Army.

The 56-year-old is currently a Bursar at Wellington School in Somerset, but has tried his hand at writing a children’s book.

Tim said: “I started writing the novel a couple of years ago and I started to leave it, but my wife pushed me to finish it and last Christmas I sent the novel away to the publisher.

“When my children were younger I used to make up my own stories instead of reading from books and I am a Dad’s Army lover so I came up with an idea and put pen to paper.”

Sergeant Jack is a humorous tale of an army of Terriers battling to protect their food rations against thieving fidos and pilfering pooches from across the English Channel.

Discussing the novel, Tim said: “The Second World War has just finished and there are extreme shortages of food in Europe, but it is not just the humans who are suffering.

“Doggy supplies are also desperately scare and the Terriertorial Army has discovered that all its own treats have been stolen during a raid.”

The publishers loved Tim’s unique story and fell in love with the characters which are a reflection of those seen in the popular television sitcom which followed the misadventures of the elderly members of the local voluntary defence force.

Although the book is targeted at eight to 12 year olds, the author let his family members read the novel ahead of the release.

“When I finished writing the novel I let my daughter read it and I could hear her belly laughing so I thought I was on the right tracks,” added Tim.

“I am planning on sending over the story to the BBC as I can imagine the story being made into a film."

The future is looking bright for Tim as he already started writing the sequel to the novel which will revolve around the theme of revenge.

Sergeant Jack is available from Amazon.
