Former pupils of a Swansea Valley school are helping British Heart Foundation Cymru’s lifesaving research by organising a school reunion event to raise vital funds to help fight for every heartbeat.

Clair Evans, from Pontardawe, who attended Cwmtawe Comprehensive School decided to organise a reunion at Pontardawe Golf Club on Saturday, December 2 in memory of two former pupils who both died from suspected heart conditions.

Kieran Sparrow was just 16 when he died. He was an exceptional student and was even tipped to play rugby for Wales. A decade later, one of his best friends, Adam Rumming died aged 27 while taking part in the second stage of the selection process for the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

Adam’s brother, Captain Paul Rumming is the Regimental Adjutant for The Royal Welsh, based at Maindy Barracks in Cardiff and Lance Corporal Jordan Davies, who was also best friends Keiran and Adam, have organised another event to support the Cwmtawe reunion.

On October 22, Paul and Jordan will lead a group of volunteers on a 24 kilometre walk known as The Fan Dance. It’s the SAS Selection Route which covers Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons.

Clair said: ‘I’m so overwhelmed by the response from people offering to help with the reunion it’s going to be an amazing night.

“It’s a chance to catch up with old friends, remember those we have lost and help British Heart Foundation.

“I’m really impressed at how many people want to take part in The Fan Dance, that’s going to be a really good event too’

Clair ‘s father passed away aged 31 of a heart condition so this is a cause that she feels passionate about and she’s really keen to help BHF.

Jayne Lewis, BHF Fundraising Manager for South West Wales said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Clair for organising the reunion event and also to Paul and Jordan for organising the walking event and raising funds for BHF Cymru.

“Too many lives are lost in Wales each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation.

“Each year these devastating conditions claim the lives of more than 750 people per month in Wales alone and thanks to the local groups and organisations in the area we’ll be able to fund even more research into these conditions.”
