A Llandeilo man has faced his biggest challenge to date to raise money for his school friend who was a victim of a brutal attack over 10 years ago.

Richard Jones, originally from Ammanford, took part in the ‘Everest challenge’ on Saturday which saw the 37-year-old ride up the Black Mountain 42 times in aid of Paul Pugh.

In 2007, Paul was attacked on the way out of The Old Cross Pub in Ammanford and was left with life-changing injuries.

The challenge equates to 8,884 km in elevation gain – which is the same as cycling the height of Mount Everest.

Richard said: “Paul requires physiotherapy five days a week to help him, but all that care comes at a cost.

“Despite his own problems he’s been left with, he has been tirelessly campaigning across schools, clubs and societies to make people think twice about their actions while under the influence.”

Inspired by this, Richard decided to take on the challenge and managed to raise almost £2,500 - £2,000 more than the target he originally set.

Alongside his friend Joel Avery, the duo set off on their challenge at 3.50am on August 12 and completed the challenge at 17 hours later at 8.30pm.

“The day went really well and all the pain was worth the total we have raised to help Paul,” said Richard.

“Friends and family had set up a picnic spot at the top of the mountain and there was plenty of humour on the road with people in fancy dress which helped us get through the day.

“This just a small reflection of pain Paul has had to endure and I will definitely do the challenge again if we can raise another £2,000 for Paul.

“The response has been fantastic, there’s been a huge amount of support for Paul.

“The money I’m raising will go towards his physiotherapy, he has to work in the hydro pool, and in the gym to keep moving, and obviously it can accumulate a lot of costs.”
