Family Housing Association Wales (FHA Wales) is delighted to announce that their new flagship development in Ammanford, Ty Dyffryn, is now officially open.

Sarah Rochira, Older Persons Commissioner for Wales, officially opened the development on Tuesday 30th May, joined by the FHA Wales team, tenants at the new development and members of the local community.

Ty Dyffryn provides social care and housing that meet the needs of the community of Ammanford and the surrounding area, offering 50 apartments for both single people and couples over 55. Those over 50 can apply if they are assessed as needing care by Carmarthenshire County Council.

FHA Wales’ Ty Dyffryn also offers the ‘Extra Care’ scheme to tenants; a range of care services, which can adapt and increase as needs change over time. Karen Dusgate, Chief Executive of FHA wales, comments: “We are immensely proud of our Extra Care Scheme. It allows our tenants to live well, age well and stay well. Within Ty Dyffryn, as with our other Extra Care schemes, tenants can retain as much independence as they choose. Tenants have their own apartment with their own front door, to come and go as they please but there are also shared facilities like a lounge area, a restaurant, hobby rooms and other facilities that can be used when they feel like company.

“If our tenants become more dependent on others to support them, then help is available on-site, meaning they won’t have to move out of their home or be separated from their partner, unless needs change to more specialist nursing care.”

Sarah Rochira, Older People's Commissioner for Wales, officially opened Ty Dyffryn and was impressed by what it had to offer. “I am delighted to officially open Ty Dyffryn and believe that the Extra Care scheme being offered by FHA Wales will make a real difference to the lives of the older people who live there.

“Loneliness as we get older is an important issue and the Extra Care schemes they provide not only offer tenants neighbourly companionship in a friendly environment but also the peace of mind that staff have the skills they need and are fully equipped to deal with changing needs over time, allowing people to remain in their homes and minimising the disruption later in life of having to move to a property where additional care is offered.”

The scheme also acts as a community hub, with activities available for the people that live at the schemes, but also for the wider community. FHA Wales are passionate that the apartments at Ty Dyffryn are part of the local community rather than separate from it and local people are encouraged to come in and use the facilities, for example, the restaurant, shop or craft rooms at Ty Dyffryn. This helps to keep the schemes busy and vibrant, integrating the scheme into the community.
