A Llandybie pensioner has become one of the biggest paid out punters at an Ammanford bookies.

Terry Jones won £73,477.93 on the horses on Saturday after placing a £9.50 bet at Ladbrokes on Quay Street.

Mr Jones, 70, said: “I have betted little amounts for years but I’ve never had a big win in my life.

“My father always used to say never bet too much money at a time, but on Saturday instead of my usual £7.50 bet I placed extra £1 accumulator each way.”

During his recent visit, Terry didn’t look at the form of the horses as part of his Lucky 15 and just went for ones which had a meaning to his family.

He said: “I picked Daniel Flyer for my grandson who’s called Daniel, Ronald R because it’s my middle name, one with Rose in because that’s my wife’s name and Jenny Grey for my daughter.”

As his winnings kept on increasing, Terry kept updating his wife who was on a caravan break.

Wife Rose said: “Terry kept on ringing and I thought something was wrong.

“First it was a couple of hundred he’d won and then all of a sudden he said £40,000 and I couldn’t believe that.

“Then when Terry called to say it was over £73,000 I was in shock and I am still in shock.

“Me and my friends went back to the caravan and cracked open the wine.”

The good news has even travelled across the seas.

“When I rang my grandson in Australia to tell him the news it was night time over there and he was on a night out,” added Terry

“The next morning he rang me to make sure that he didn’t dream it but I told him that it is definitely real.”

When asked what he’ll spend his money on, Terry already has a plan in mind.

He said: “I am going to treat myself to a new car.

"The last one we bought around five years ago cost around £15,000 due to all the adaptions that need to be made, so it is going to be more than that now.

“The money couldn’t have come at a better time."

Customer service manager at Ladbrokes Ammanford, Simon Onyewu added: “I am over the moon for Terry.

“It is nice when money goes to the right type of people.”
