A Gwendraeth Valley doctor is going the extra 100 miles to raise money for charity this weekend.

Doctor Alison Hill, who is a GP based in Tumble, is cycling from Cardiff to Tenby in aid of a diabetes charity aimed at helping children with the chronic disease.

Dr Hill will be joined by other cyclists on the ride, known as the CARTEN100, this Saturday, May 6.

The cycle ride takes place roughly over a 10 hour period taking a leisurely ride over AA fairly direct route using A-roads, B-Roads and cycle routes with a few climbs.

Dr Hill, who works at Meddygfa’r Tymble, said: “"I hope to show that despite my sedentary job and approaching my 50th birthday, I can still keep fit and enjoy a challenge that takes me out of my comfort zone.

“Each day I am encouraging people to improve their health and fitness levels, whatever their starting point. I now need to practice what I preach. Wish me luck.

“The motto for CARTEN100 is it is a challenge, never a race. It is a sportive or a race, just a ride to Tenby.”

The JDFR (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) carries out research into treatment prevention and cure of Type 1 diabetes in children.

Speaking about the charity, Dr Hill said: “I am pleased to be supporting the charity.

“The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is aiming to research, treat and eventually find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

“A large population of their research takes place in Cardiff so we know that we can get the fundraising money to those that can really make the difference.”

To sponsor Dr Hill, ask for her at the Meddygfa’r Tymble surgery or go to Justgiving.com and search for Allison Hill.

The doctor has already built up support on her fundraising page.

One user wrote “Thank you for raising money for JDRF. My daughter has type 1 and I am so supportive of the work of the charity and of fundraisers such as yourself. I pray for a cure.”

Another added: “All the best with the training Alison and for the big day.”
