A healthy eating programme has benefited from the support of a Swansea Valley supermarket.

HWB Abertawe, is an initiative run via Swansea Council for Voluntary Service, and aims to deliver practical advice and support about healthy eating to vulnerable individuals and families throughout Swansea.

Tesco Pontardawe has sponsored its package scheme, which will enable the charity to distribute dried-food packages to the 352 service users they expect to see in 2017.

Thanks to the support, each family or individual will receive a box containing vegetable oil, mixed herbs, garlic powder, black pepper, stock cubes, curry powder, chilli powder, plain flower, soy sauce and freezer bags.

Caroline Thomas, store manager for Tesco Superstore, Pontardawe, said: “We are delighted to offer our support to HWB Abertawe.

“The charity offers an important service empowering families and individuals to cook good, healthy food. Our food boxes should hopefully give them a good start by providing key items and we’re happy to be able to help.”

Established in October 2016, HWB Abertawe is funded by the Big Lottery and will work with families implementing its six-week programme which includes information on nutrition and teaching practical cooking techniques. It is a self-referral service and the programme can be delivered either in a person’s home or community hall if it’s a large group.

Amanda Edwards, Project Coordinator for HWB Abertawe, said: “We are so grateful for the donation from Tesco, the store cupboard ingredient boxes will benefit so many people in the area from vulnerable individuals to families. The support from the store will last a full year and benefit over 350 local families.”
