County councillors are negotiating plans with property owners in Ammanford ahead of the installation of a new roundabout in the town.

A public consultation took place in October regarding the plans to improve traffic congestion at the intersection between Wind Street and Tirydail Lane.

Some residents have received compulsory purchase letters from developers following the plans but have been reassured by the local authority that it is part of a procedure.

County executive board member for the environment, Cllr Hazel Evans has said the scheme proposals had been finalised following a comprehensive and successful public consultation.

Cllr Evans said: “The letter referred to was sent to all interested parties by contractors acting for the authority. It was a standard letter sent to all landowners in the vicinity of the scheme.

“The authority is currently in the process of negotiating the required property acquisitions to proceed with the scheme at the earliest opportunity.”

Carmarthenshire County Council received a grant of £400,000 from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund to develop proposals to address congestion and to look at the feasibility of longer term major infrastructure improvements.

The Wind Street and Tirydail Lane junction is a vital intersection of routes leading to and from the upper Amman Valley to the trunk road network and the M4 and there is significant congestion at peak times.

Councillors are awaiting confirmation before they can go ahead with their plans which will include a signalised pedestrian crossing through the junction.
