Scam callers have targeted Carmarthenshire residents by promising a Council Tax refund and asking them for their bank details.
Carmarthenshire County Council is warning people to be on their guard about the scam.
Several people have reported that they, or their elderly relatives, have received calls from someone claiming to represent the council’s Council Tax department.
The scammer offers to refund money if they provide their bank account details.
Cllr Jim Jones, Executive Board Member for Public Protection, said: “This scam has the potential to catch vulnerable people out. If anyone does receive a call of this nature, please hang up.
“If in doubt, you are welcome to call us the council’s main switchboard on 01267 234567 or the Council Tax team direct on 01554 742200 to verify whether it is a legitimate call.”
Anyone who believes they have been scammed, or knows of someone who may have given their bank details during a scam call, can contact the council’s Trading Standards team for advice.
