Ammanford Jobcentre is set to stage a self-employment event offering advice and support to those wanting to set up their own business.

Now in its second year, Be Your Own Boss will give people the opportunity to interact with local businesses and role models who will offer advice and support.

The event, scheduled for Friday, February 17, is organised by the Jobcentre with support from Paolo Piana, a development officer for Prime Cymru, who has been drafted in as secretary.

Prime Cymru is the Prince of Wales's Initiative for Mature Enterprise in Wales which provides practical support to people aged 50 and over.

However the event is not targeted at those over 50, in fact it is for people aged 18 plus who are looking at getting into the world of self-employment.

Paolo said: "Many people are unaware of just how easy it is to work for yourself and this event will show people that registering self-employed and dealing with your own tax isn't as scary as it seems.

"With the help from the people at the Jobcentre you could be well on your way to realising your dream."

A number of providers will be available to chat on the day, which runs from 10am to 2pm. Those who go along will see inspirational workshops delivered by people who have experience of setting up their own business and know the best course of action to pursue your chosen venture.

Paolo added: "I have worked in and around Ammanford in different projects for a number of years and I know a lot of people see it as the forgotten town in Carmarthenshire.

"We would like to use this event as a stepping stone to bring focus back into the town. It will give the people of Ammanford the opportunity to realise their dream and in turn could bring more businesses to the town.

"A business, if run successfully, can open up opportunities for other people. The business owner then becomes the employer.

"Being self-employed however doesn't have to be opening up a shop, one of the bonuses is that you can run it from home, working hours that suit you and your family life.

"We want to put Ammanford back on the map as a centre for innovation."

The event will also see a number of VIP guests and local dignitaries who will offer encouragement to those attending.
