A LLANDOVERY college student has become an online sensation by posting videos of his gardening tips which have reached seven million hits across the world.

Since the age of 11, Huw Richards-Price has been producing videos on growing your own food and he has created over 300 films to date.

His YouTube channel boasts an impressive 37,000 subscribers and he has recently been awarded £4,300 by UnLtd to further develop his business.

Earlier in the year, the Head Boy and sixth former was awarded the Aspiring Entrepreneur Award at the University of South Wales’ Making Business Happen Awards.

Huw said: “I went down there not knowing what to expect, to be honest. The standard of entries was extremely high so I was surprised and delighted to find out I had actually won."

Along with the award, Huw received £2,000 prize money.

The teen, who gained an interest in food since helping his dad in the vegetables garden planting peas when he was 4, has also set up a business which promotes the benefits of locally grown food, provides information on growing methods.

Huw, who is studying biology, geography and art, added: “Promoting the benefits of local food and helping build links between growers and their communities will assist the local economy as money will stay in the area. Sustainable growing methods and being local will also have minimal impact on the environment.”

Huw has decided not to go to university when he finishes college next year, but will devote his time and energy to developing his business.

Exciting plans for Huw’s future include extensive travel to experience and capture on film examples of small scale, local and sustainable food production in countries across the world. On his return Huw hopes to put the knowledge and experience he has gained to good use and set up a permaculture demonstration farm.

Having been brought up on a smallholding near Tregaron, Huw’s interest in local, organic and sustainable food production has been a subject close to his heart since he was a young boy.

In college itself, he chairs the Sustainability Group and is actively involved in a number of initiatives such as establishing raised vegetable beds and creating a greenhouse out of recycled bottles.

Huw said: “I feel really lucky to be part of a college where each pupil is recognised as an individual and is given the opportunity and support to develop their own interests and strengths and the confidence to follow their dream.”
