The South Wales Guardian this week marks an incredible landmark.

On September 4, office manager Angela Morris celebrates 50 years with the newspaper.

Angela began working for the Newsquest-owned South Wales Guardian, based in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, in 1966 immediately after leaving school.

Angela, now 66, has worked under every editor in the newspaper’s history, from founder Gwynne Evans to current incumbent Steve Adams.

“When I started work at the Guardian there was only an outside toilet at the bottom of the garden and no hot water,” said Angela.

“I used to get into quite a bit of trouble for coming to work in mini-skirts.

“Things have changed immensely during my time as we moved from hot metal printing through the introduction of computers to where we are today.”

Angela is currently Newsquest’s second longest serving staff member.

Her dedication has ensured she has become synonymous with the South Wales Guardian, in her eyes of readers and colleagues.

“Editors, reporters and other staff come and go, but rain or shine, Angela is always here,” said Steve.

“She is the font of all knowledge: about both the history of the newspaper and the Ammanford area.

“She is the thread which ties the Guardian of today with its origins and all the people and stories that have been part of this newspaper’s history.

“More importantly though, she is quite simply a lovely person. She is an absolute joy and a privilege to work with.

“I will also be eternally grateful for all the support, insight and advice she has offered me during my time at the Guardian both as reporter and editor.

“Angela Morris will be forever linked to the South Wales Guardian because Angela is the Guardian.”
