A THOUGHTFUL birthday gift from her daughter has unlocked the memory of a former Garnant resident

Stella Grylls received a porcelain daffodil off her daughter Angela for her 87th birthday last month and it has transported her back to the George V Silver Jubilee celebrations which took place in Garnant Park in 1935.

On July 19, 1935 Stella, then Cockram, was just two weeks off her sixth birthday when a day off school was given to her and a thousand of local children to mark the celebrations in Garnant Park. Stella was presented with a silver jubilee mug souvenir by Mrs Lilly Folland and her family.

The jubilee mug was carried out at the Gladstone Pottery in Staffordshire and has remained a valued possession of Stella’s for 81 years. It has moved with the family and currently sits pride of place in her display cabinet in Surrey.

Angela realised the history of the mug when researching Garnant history for her mum and made the connection to the Gladstone Pottery using David Michael’s Glanaman history website. By chance, Angela had already visited the pottery twice before, now a museum, without realising the historical link.

Stella’s daughter decided to make another visit but discovered that al the records of original pottery were destroyed. Although the museum still manufactures limited numbers of small items.

Angela said: “I went back to the pottery to order a daffodil but it was originally sold out. A large coach-party of Welsh people simply bought them all.

“I then made an order for one to be made for my mum’s birthday and told the potter about the significance.”

Stella, widow of Roy Grylls of Llandybie, said: “When I received the gift the memories just came flooding back. It was so lovely.

“I now have two linked items to cherish my childhood and married life in Wales and being Welsh. Twyn is where I spent my married life.”

The grandmother of four tries to visit the Amman Valley every year and now cherishes both the 1935 mug and now the 2016 daffodil reflecting on the lifetime of events between both gifts.
