AN AMMANFORD youth club who has 100 registered members has thanked local businesses who have donated a significant amount of equipment to the organisation.

Charity run Maerdy Youth was contacted by Simon Stephens of SJS Building Maintenance after seeing a plea for donations on the club’s social media page.

Youth worker Zoe Davies said: “Simon saw our post of Facebook that one of our volunteers had put on asking people for donations of any old sports equipment and board games.

“Simon got in touch with me and said he wanted to support a local club as he used to be a member of a youth club when he was younger.

“He was concerned at the fact that as a club we had nothing and we desperately wanted to buy equipment for the young people.”

Local businessman Simon said: “SJS has donated equipment to a club in the community for the past three years.

“In previous years we have donated rugby kits but after speaking to coaches there was no need for new kits this year as last year’s kits are still in good condition.

“I contacted Maerdy Youth and they said they were happy with any help, so I went out and bought sports equipment."

Simon presented the club, which opened in 2015, with tennis rackets, cricket bats, board games, footballs, rugby balls and other sporting equipment last week.

He added: “The children looked so happy when they seen all the new equipment they can now play with when they visit the club.”

Also NPT Homes donated hundreds of pounds worth of craft equipment for the clubs use.

Zoe said: “Simon was so generous and we can’t thank him enough for what he has provided the youth club with.

"A volunteer from NPT Homes came to the youth club on the same day and not only spent time with club members doing arts and crafts but also donated hundreds of pounds worth of craft equipment.

“We are so pleased that local businesses have helped us out.”

Maerdy Youth takes place at Canolfan Maerdy in Tairgwaith every Wednesday from 6.30 until 9pm.
