THIS year marks the ten year anniversary of the real life wacky racers event held in Ammanford.

The Annual Charity Wheelbarrow Race, otherwise known as the Barrow Racers, is a 6 mile real life wacky racers bar crawl event where teams of two dress up in the their best fancy dress costumes and take it in turns to push each other in a wheelbarrow for the duration of the competition.

The route begins at Amman United RFC in Glanaman and stretches down to Ammanford and then eventually return back to the Amman united ground.

The teams involved all fundraise collectively on the way down and then on the way back the real race begins. Although it is not all as it seems.

Nick Francis, who has been organising the event for the past decade along with Christian Madge, said: “Over the decade, we have had a lot of fun and the community members getting involved has been brilliant.

“This year we are bringing the twist back where the racers stop off at a total of 16 bars on the way down and back where they must drink a pint in order to progress.

“Some racers don’t end up actually finishing event but those who do complete the race get back to Amman with a crowd of people cheering and applauding and they gain a legendary status.”

Last year, the Annual Charity Wheelbarrow Race saw around 100 people attend the event, which broke the record.

Nick added: “We’ve been raising around £1000 over recent years, and we would love to beat that total

“We are raising money for LATCH Children’s Cancer Charity which we have been supporting for the last few years.”

“The event has grown significantly and it has been well received by the local community. Dyfed Powys Police even attended the event last year and gave a talk to the competitors regarding drink awareness as part of a way to steer the event safely.”

The event is for all the family and organisers say it is a fantastic day out.

The event takes place this Saturday, July 16 at the Amman United RFC at 12 noon.
