CARMARTHENSHIRE was one of the majority of Welsh local authority areas opting to leave the European Union.

The majority of county residents voted in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
The total number of votes cast in Carmarthenshire in favour of LEAVE was 55,381
The total number of votes cast in Carmarthenshire in favour of REMAIN was 47,654
Turnout was 74 per cent (103,126). There were 91 rejected ballot papers.


Counting took place at the Selwyn Samuel Centre, Llanelli. The result was announced by Counting Officer Mark James.

Neighbourong Swansea saw a total of 120,362 people voting on polling day and via postal vote prior to that - a turnout of 69.59 per cent.
Of those, 58,307 voted Remain and 61,936 for Leave.


In Neath Port Talbot, 56.8 per cent - 43,001 - were for Leave, and 43.2 per cent - 32,651 - votedfor Remain

In a surprise move following the announcement of the Leave victory, David Cameron resigned as Prime Minister.

An ewmotional Mr Cameron made the announcement shortly after 8am, stating the UK would required a new Prime Minister in place by the start of the Conservative conference in October.

He also announced he would leave the job of triggering Article 50 - the element of EU rules which begins the two-year process of a nation state exiting the union - to his successor.
