WELSH classical musician Shân Cothi is set to take centre stage at Ammanford and District Choral Society's annual concert.

The choir will host the concert in the main hall of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman on Saturday, May 14 in what promises to be an evening of musical enjoyment.

The Choral Society, who celebrate their 70th anniversary next year, boast to be one of the oldest choir's in South Wales, having started out before the second world war.

Choir treasurer Eira Davies explains: "The choir began before the second world war and then took a break. It officially started back up in 1947 so we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary next year from that date."

Over the years the choir has promoted cultural activities throughout the area and raised thousands of pounds for charities, and continues to do so.

The annual concerts have always been a highlight in the cultural calendar attracting international singers and instrumentalists.

This year is to be no exception as the choir welcomes the talents of Welsh soprano Shân Cothi as their soloist.

Shân made her West End debut as Carlotta in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera and in 2014 appeared with Bryn Terfel as Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Last years the singer understudied Emma Thompson in the same role with the English National Opera.

Ammanford Town Silver Band will also make an appearance at the concert under the baton of Glyn Davies - a band that has a long and successful history spanning more than a century.

The concert will once again be under the baton of Musical Director Indeg Thomas who this year celebrates 17 years with the choir. The accompanist for the evening is Gloria Lloyd a seasoned and accomplished performer, who took over following the passing of long standing accompanist Olwen Richards.

Eira Davies added: "This promises to be a wonderful evening of musical enjoyment, so come along for an evening to remember."

The concert takes place on Saturday, May 14 at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman at 7pm.

Admission by ticket from any choir member is priced at £10 or pay at the door.
