A PONTARDDULAIS fundraiser has organised an event in memory of her grandmother to raise money for a hospice.

Best friends Kirsty Howells and Vivienne Hart will host a charity night in Pontarddulais Workmen's Club in memory of Kirsty's beloved gran Shirley Ann Rees who sadly passed away in July 2015 at Ty Olwen Hospice in Morriston.

To thank the staff at the hospice and for the support her grandmother received, all proceeds from the event will be donated to Ty Olwen.

When Kirsty’s gran was terminally ill with cancer she gave up work to nurse her before she went to Ty Olwen for the last weeks of her life.

Shirley wanted to donate money to Ty Olwen when she passed away.

Best friend Vivienne's grandfather also passed away in the hospice 14 years ago.

Speaking about her pal Kirsty's experience at the hospice, Vivienne said: “Ty Olwen was amazing towards the last stages of Shirley's life. Kirsty felt so supported by the staff and became very aware of how important donations are for the hospice to give the level of care that they do.”

Kirsty went on to qualify as a nurse and now volunteers one shift a week at Ty Olwen and is a committed fundraiser.

Coming up to the one year anniversary of her gran’s death, Kirsty wanted to do something in her memory so teamed up with Vivienne to organise the fundraiser for Friday, April 15.

Vivienne said: “We’re hoping the night will become an annual thing because we know how much Ty Olwen Hospice relies on donations and volunteers to stay open.

“We chose Pontarddulais Workmen’s Club because Shirley was from Pontarddulais and her husband still drinks there with his friends.”

The Club has donated their out function room free of charge and local band The Good Things will be also be performing at the event for free.

One band members’ mother passed away in Ty Olwen so the hospice is very close to their hearts too.

Entertainment will also come from a female singer, plus bingo, a raffle and a buffet.

Decorations for the room have been provided at cost price by local businesses such as Swansea Wedding Decorators and CJ Balloons.

The Celtic Manor and The Towers among others have donated stays for the raffle.

The pair would like to thank all the local businesses who have supported them and donated.

Tickets are available to purchase from the club.
