The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected Richard Church as their candidate for the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner election.

Mr Church is a former member of a police authority and lives in Welshpool.

Following his selection, Mr Church said: “Dyfed-Powys Police area has the worst record in Wales for the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on the roads per 1,000 of the population.

"If elected I will make saving lives on our roads a top priority, and that means ensuring the Police work closely with local communities, local councils and the Welsh Government to tackle dangerous roads and promote safer driving.

“At the moment, our Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner is invisible to most people. He is in the top six of the most expensive Police and Crime Commissioner offices per head of population in the UK, and now wants to take more power by taking over the fire service.

"I want to cut the costs of the Police Commissioner's office, invest in front-line policing and move towards scrapping Police and Crime Commissioners at the earliest opportunity.”
