SCHOOLS across the area have been colour-coded, ranked by their performance.
The categorisation list from the Welsh Government was released yesterday listing each school in the area, ranking them with green, yellow, amber or red.
Ammanford’s primary school’s which include, Parcyrhun, Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman and Ysgol Bro Banw have been categorised as green- doing well and in need of the least support.
Other local schools in the Ammanford and Amman Valley area also received green or yellow categorisations. Those in the Towy Valley were also in the main awarded green or yellow labels, with a few being placed into amber.
No schools in Carmarthenshire were given the status of red- identified as those needing the most support.
In Neath Port Talbot there were broader results with a similar pattern for primaries in the Swansea authority.
Comprehensives were also categorised. Cwmtawe Community School has been awarded green, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, Maes Y Gwendraeth and Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera all labelled yellow.
Each school’s category has been determined by a range of factors, including the leadership quality, performance data, self- evaluation and its wider capacity to improve.
Local authorities and regional consortia also have a key role to play in deciding the categories of schools in their areas.
Figures across Wales shows that 79.5 per cent of primary schools and 57 per cent of secondary schools are in either the green or yellow categories. Of 1316 primary schools 294 (22 per cent) are in the green category and 32 (only 2 per cent) are in the red category.
Of 212 Secondary schools, 39 are in the green category (18 per cent) and 26 are in red category (12 per cent). Direct comparisons cannot be made to last year’s results due adjustments to the data matrix
The Welsh Government has said schools in the green category will have a key role to play in supporting schools in the other categories to improve.
Carmarthenshire County Councillor Kevin Madge paid tribute to his local school, Ysgol Y Bedol in Garnant, and to others in the county.
"As former chair of Governors at Ysgol y Bedol I would like to say how pleased I am that the school has kept in the green zone this year," he said.
"I feel the school always goes that extra mile for pupils on free school meals, which is the reason the school has one again achieved this excellent result. I believe the school’s success is down to head teacher Donna Williams and her staff."
Cllr Madge added: "It was also pleasing to see no schools in the area were in the red zone. It shows schools continue to improve.
"The improvement year on year, I believe, is down to the Welsh Government’s 21st century schools programme."
The Categories:
GREEN: Highly effective schools with a track record of high levels of achievement
YELLOW: Effective schools and with good achievements but need to take some action to improve.
AMBER: Schools that need improvement and are not improving quickly enough. Intervention and short-term support will be given.
RED: Schools experiencing a decline in key performance aspects and in need of the greatest improvements. Will receive intensive support and intervention
