A WEST Wales publishing company is calling on the Welsh to challenge the decision to include the Union Flag on all new driving licenses.
In 2014 the UK Government announced that the Union Jack would appear alongside the EU banner on all new driver licenses issued in the UK from July 2015.
However, Ceredigion-based publisher Y Lolfa has produced red dragon stickers suitable to be place over the Union Flag on individual licenses.
“We believe it is completely unfair that Britishness is being imposed upon us in this way,” said Fflur Arwel, Y Lolfa’s head of marketing.
“People are not given the choice to declare their nationality nor show that they are proud to be Welsh.”
A DVLA spokesman urged drivers to refrain from altering their licence.
“Drivers should not alter their licences as it could lead to difficulties proving their driving entitlement to their employers or authorities,” said the spokesman.
“Also if they wish to replace a defaced licence we would charge a fee.”
It remained unclear as to whether the move would invalidate licenses or be a breach of the law.
