SPEEDING motorists were left red faced and having to explain their behaviour to a group of Drefch pupils determined to stamp out speeding outside their school.

One driver was so embarrassed, he dodged the ordeal by accepting a fixed penalty notice.

The Speeding Initiative outside schools throughout the county is being promoted as part of Carmarthenshire's Community Safety Partnership.

Officers from Carmarthenshire County Council's Road Safety unit teamed up with Cross Hands Neighbourhood Policing team and pupils from Drefach School Council to target speeding drivers.

The aim of the campaign is to educate drivers and raise awareness of the impact that speeding vehicles has on local communities, and the objective is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured each year on the roads in Carmarthenshire.

The offending drivers were given the option of speaking to the pupils to explain why they were speeding outside their school, or accept a fixed penalty notice.

County Road Safety Officer Rhys John-Howes said a fixed penalty notice was issued to one driver with a further 16 drivers facing the children’s questions.

County Executive Board Member for transport services, Cllr Hazel Evans, said: “The safety of children outside schools is paramount.

“This initiative highlights the dangers and raises the awareness of speeding outside schools not only to the drivers, but to the children as well. Facing the children can be a sobering awareness call to the dangers of speeding. ”
