Amman Valley residents are being urged to support this year's Poppy Appeal.

The Royal British Legion Garnant branch are in urgent need of volunteers to help with this year's appeal which starts on October 22.

County councillor and poppy secretary Kevin Madge said the group is lacking people to go door-to-door in the Amman Valley selling poppies for the two-week appeal.

"We welcome people young and old," said Cllr Madge.

"The problem we have is those who served in the Second World War are in their 90s now so we desperately need more on board.

"The Garnant branch has raised tens of thousands of pounds over the years. The people of the community are always very generous, it is vital we keep it up.

The branch was founded by Cllr Madge's grandfather in 1924 and last year celebrated its 90th birthday.

David Brinley Madge served in World War One along with Kevin’s other grandfather Evan Morgan.

"The men who went into combat during World War One paid the ultimate sacrifice, many of us wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them,” said Cllr Madge.

"But we must not forget those who came back and were never the same again.

"As the Armed Forces champion for Carmarthenshire I know how much of a difference the money raised will make."

Garnant British Legion is now urging more people to show their support and sign up for the appeal or become members.

"You don't have to be in the armed forces, we welcome anyone," added Cllr Madge.
