Four Members of Tycroes RFC recently visited the grave of Welsh Guards soldier Latimer Jones who was killed in action on the Somme in 1916.

Latimer was the first captain of Tycroes RFC and instrumental in the formation of the club in 1912.

The group also visited The Thiepval Monument where the names of former club players Idris Anthony and Hubert (Bert) Goldsby are recorded on the same memorial stone. Both were serving in the Welsh Regiment, it is also recorded that Bert Goldsby had been awarded The Military medal.

Since returning home, further research has shown that the club's second captain David Jones (Pantycelyn) of the Royal Engineers is buried at Heilly Stn Cemetery, Mericourt-L'abbe. The four hope to pay respects at his memorial in future.

The group also attended the nightly Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.

They would like to thank Nevin Anthony for his assistance in researching the trip.
