CWMAMAN Town Council has announced ambitious plans to modernise the disused paddling pool at Garnant park.

The pool has fallen into a state of disrepair and remained unused for more than three years after it became increasing difficult for either Carmarthenshire County Council or the town council to provide adequate supervisory cover when the pool was in use.

However, since the park was transferred from the local authority to the town council, there have been calls from the public to make use of the facility.

The council recently announced ambitious plans to install splashpads – similar to those being enjoyed at Ammanford Park – in the pool.

“We have listened to what the public want and we have put a plan in place to make it happen,” said Mayor Shahid Hussain.

“The multi-use games area now being completed in the park is Phase Two of the regeneration of the park and the splashpads are Phase Three.

“The splashpads are the next big project for the council and we are extremely optimistic that by next summer the facility will be fully up and running.

“As with all things these days however we need public support to make the project become a reality.”

Councillor Hussain pointed to the success of a recent public meeting which called for community backing to support the Glanaman Education Centre.

“That last meeting about the centre shows that people are willing to get involved,” he said.

“It shows people care about their community and are willing to help the council to provide the best facilities we can.

“We need the people of Cwmaman to get behind us again to help make sure we can deliver the splashpads for the children in this community.”

Deputy mayor, Cllr Kevin Madge also called for the backing of the community and urged residents to attend a meeting, scheduled for the autumn, when the council would be laying out its plans for the paddling pool.

“I hope as many people from the community as possible attend,” he said.

“For us to get the funding we need it is vital that we can show we have the whole community behind us,” he said.
