TWO people have been fined for dropping cigarette ends in Cross Hands Business Park.

Council environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in the park at the time of the offences.

Fixed penalty notices for £75 were issued to a woman in the Co-op car park and a man in the Leekes car park.

If the fines are not paid, they can be prosecuted in court where the maximum fine for littering is £2,500.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Councillor Jim Jones said: “Many people don’t think that cigarette ends are litter but they are.

"Not only do they look unsightly, but they fall in to cracks and gaps in the pavement and are very difficult and costly to clean up.

“We have been campaigning to raise awareness of smoking-related litter so there really is no excuse for it; anyone caught by our officers will be fined.

“We want a cleaner and safer environment for everyone,” he added.
