A LLANDEILO man has become the third generation of his family honoured by the Queen.

William Owain Walden-Jones has been made an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for services to the mental health.

“I was delighted when I heard the news,” said Mr Walden-Jones.

“It will certainly keep with the family tradition as both my mother and grandfather received CBEs”

William’s mother Jill received her honour for her work with the Women’s Voluntary Service and her father Arthur Floyd received his CBE in the Second World War while working as a civil engineer.

William, 55, has given years of service to the needs of mental health service users in Wales since his appointment as Director of the Welsh branch of the National Schizophrenia Fellowship, Rethink, in 1995.

Mr Walden-Jones was instrumental in setting up Hafal – The Welsh organisation working with people with mental illness and their families, and was made chief executive in 2003.

“I am particularly proud to be part of Hafal, which has proved to be a great success since it was set up,” said William.

“Hafal sets an example by having a business run by and for people with mental health issues.”

William possesses a rare passion for his work which inspires both Hafal employees and the mental health voluntary sector landscape more widely.

He has ensured that Hafal has campaigned for the outcomes that make a positive difference to people’s lives, including holistic care and treatment planning, now enshrined in law in Wales by the ground-breaking Mental Health Measure.

Despite stepping down, William continues to support Hafal and campaigns for mental health support.

William does not yet know when he will receive his honour, but is looking forward to the event.

“It will be a lovely day out and I will be taking my wife Sheila along – I’m sure she’ll be looking for a new hat for the occasion.”

Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb has congratulated the 57 Welsh recipients of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, which also include a Knighthood for rugby legend, Gareth Edwards for services to sport and good causes, and Welsh composer Dr. Karl Jenkins.

“These honours recognise the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, in a wide range of professions, industries and communities.

“I’m delighted to see so many people from all walks of Welsh life honoured today. We can all take pride in their many and varied accomplishments. They are all outstanding individuals, people who are making a change in their communities, and inspiring others. Congratulations to you all.”
