AT 109 years old Ffairfach’s Gwenllian Davies is the oldest person in Wales — but she isn’t the only super-centenarian in the village.

Incredibly, Gwenllian lives at Awel Tywi care home with retired nurse Mary Kier, 103, and former farmer Winston Peregrine, 102.

Gwenllian turns 110 this October, and although she confesses to be a little deaf and sometimes forgetful, still walks unaided and serves tea for her visitors.

Formerly of Pontardawe, Gwenllian – who was a farmer’s daughter and then farmer’s wife – was born on the same day the Wright brothers made the first aeroplane flight on October 5, 1905, the year Albert Einstein published his papers for his theory of relativity.

Home manager Sharon Dyer said: “To have three super-centenarians among 38 residents is quite exceptional. People ask us what we put in the tea. It is nothing but love and attention and a happy environment.”

County health and social care executive board member, Councillor Jane Tremlett said Gwenllian was a wise, well read and witty person who had led a fulsome, incredible life spanning an amazing century of changes.

The era of fight might have been in its infancy but by the time she was 36 in 1941, Gwenllian can remember seeing the Luftwaffe’s three-day blitz from her hilltop farm home above Swansea.

Gwenllian remembers seeing Swansea “ablaze with explosions day and night.”

The First World War still rankles as her pocket money was cut from 1d a week to a halfpenny. “The war wasn’t my fault” she said, “why should I be penalised.”

Widow of Arthur, who died in 1970. Gwenllian has no children but her farm Lletty Philip was often open house to children from the Pontardawe community and nephews and nieces who called her Aunty Gwennie.

Her great nephew and wife Martin and Eleri recall as many as a dozen children at a time on the farm on Saturdays and as many slept over.

Eleri says all the children worked hard helping with milking, herding and the sheep and looked forward to Gwenllian’s big breakfasts where up to 24 eggs would be sizzling in the pan.

Before she went to the Awel Tywi five years ago Gwenllian was often seen outside her Llandeilo home weeding the garden until night fell.

Eleri says: “Gwenllian is the most remarkably intelligent woman who has worked hard all her life. She has never smoked or had anything other than the odd celebratory drink.

“Gwenllian’s aim has been to help others. She has always been known for her kindness.”
